Celebrity Pedicurist Carla Kay’s Tips for an At Home Pedicure
1. Remove all old polish before you begin and make sure your feet are clean and free from oils or lotions.
2. Fill a footbath with comfortably hot water along with a foot soak or even some shampoo. For an aromatherapy treatment, add your favourite essential oil. Lavender is great for soothing and relaxing, peppermint is great for reviving. Sit back and allow the fragrance to affect you. Soak for at least 5 minutes to loosen up dead, dry skin. Continue to soak the feet between steps. Bringing one foot out of the water at a time, with a dry towel remove excess water for each of the following steps.
3. With a nail clipper, clip nail straight across leaving a sliver of white, about an eighth of an inch. Toenails should be square, this aids in preventing in-grown toenails. With a medium file smooth the free edge of the nail.
4. Use an Airplus for her Spalina Pedistone to attack calluses and rough spots on the sole of your foot. If calluses are thick and hard, use the rough side and finish smoothing them out with the smoother side. If you have just a couple of rough spots, try just the smooth side. You will be surprised at how well this works.
5. With a Hindu stone cuticle pusher or an orangewood stick, gently and in a circular motion, push back the cuticles. Also try turning the pusher on its side, and again in a circular motion gently remove any cuticle that is stuck to the plate of the nail. Many times this is unseen by the eye. Also with the orangewood stick go under the free edge of the nail to remove any dead, dry skin.
6. Using a course file like an Airplus for her Spalina Pedistone, gently roll off dead, dry skin from around the cuticle area, tips of the toes and those dry, cracked corners. This feels like you are scratching an itch you didn't know you had.
7. With a blue-on-blue file, use the dark blue side to, gently buff the nail plate, paying close attention to the area closest to the cuticles. You want to completely remove any unwanted cuticle that is left. This aids in creating a smooth, clean pedicure and also helps the nail lacquer adhere better. If you should have unwanted ridges on the nail use this file to gently smooth them out.
8. Use Airplus for her Spalina Sugar Scrub to exfoliate your feet.
9. Hydrate your feet using Airplus for her Spalina Heal Crème and massage it into your feet.
10. For a deep conditioning treatment slather your feet with Airplus for her Spalina Heal Crème, use a large plastic baggy and wrap your entire foot in the baggy and then put on a pair of Airplus for her Spa Therapy Socks. For deep cracks on the heel use the Airplus for her Spalina Repair Crème and keep it on overnight or, if short on time, leave on for as long as time allows. The baggy keeps the heat of the body in and helps the crème to penetrate deep into the skin.
11. Remove socks and baggy and clean the nail plate with a non-oily polish remover and cotton ball. You want the nail plate completely free of all oils and lotions. This helps the lacquer to adhere to the nail plate for a longer-lasting pedicure.
12. Begin with a base coat. Always use a base coat because this helps the lacquer last longer and go on smoother. Remember to always apply 2 coats of colour and a topcoat. This helps provide a longer-lasting professional looking pedicure.
